Gareth Barry believes that his Everton side have made a real statement with their winning start to their Europa League campaign after they beat Wolfsburg 4-1.

An own goal from Ricardo Rodriguez (who also netted at the right end late on) and strikes from Seamus Coleman, Leighton Baines and Kevin Mirallas handed Roberto Martinez side victory to get their continental adventure off to the perfect start.

Barry, a veteran of European campaigns after a spell with Manchester City, believes that his side have made the perfect start to their quest to make it out of the group stages and sent a real signal to Lille and Krasnodar – who drew their opener:

“There are only six games in the group and it’s important you get off to a good start.

“Against a quality team we put in a good performance and scored four great goals. To win in your first game takes loads of pressure off. You don’t want to go into your second game away from home with no points.

“Now we take our confidence into the games away from home which will be tough tests.”

Wolfsburg were tipped to qualify from the group, making Everton’s victory all the more impressive.
